Citizenship

Apply for German citizenship with Szypulka Rechtsanwälte

We assess your eligibility and supporting documents, prepare your citizenship application and submit it on your behalf. We then handle communication with the authority.

Your citizenship assessment

More than a quick check: a thorough assessment of your circumstances.

Support with your citizenship application

From your initial information to evidence that the authority has received your application: we prepare and submit it for you. We begin work on the substance of your case once the engagement documents are complete and the agreed advance payment has been confirmed.

  1. We identify applicants and the responsible authority

We clarify who is applying for citizenship and which authority is responsible for your current place of residence. For families, we check who needs a separate application and which children can be included in a parent’s application.

We assign each person’s information and documents to the correct application. We also identify the appropriate submission channel and the requirements of the responsible authority.

  2. We collect your information and documents digitally

You receive a questionnaire and a link through which you can upload your documents. We explain exactly which information and documents we need for your application.

We distinguish between evidence needed for preparation and supplementary documents. If you are missing a document, you can tell us; we will then clarify how to proceed.

  3. We check whether you meet the citizenship requirements

We check your identity and nationality, the length and lawfulness of your residence, and your residence permit. We compare your information with the available documents.

If you do not have a valid passport, we examine which other evidence may be legally sufficient in your case. An attorney assesses legal questions concerning proof of identity.

We assess your employment and financial circumstances using the relevant evidence. For employees, this includes, in particular, recent payslips; for self-employed people, business records, insurance evidence and information about pension provision may be required.

We also take account of state benefits, actual housing costs and family circumstances. If financial self-sufficiency requires closer legal assessment, we clarify this before submitting the application.

We check the evidence of your German language skills and your knowledge of Germany’s legal and social system. We also consider whether existing school qualifications or other evidence may be accepted instead of a test.

We distinguish between a requirement that has not yet been met and evidence that is simply still missing. This helps identify the questions to resolve before submission.

Marriage, divorce, children and parental custody may affect the information and evidence needed for the application. We assess the family circumstances and ask questions where documents and information do not match.

We also consider previous convictions, ongoing criminal investigations and any potentially applicable exceptions or discretionary provisions. An attorney clarifies significant legal uncertainties before the application is submitted.

  4. We review your documents and resolve outstanding questions

We check that the required documents are complete and clearly legible, assigned to the correct person and sufficiently up to date. We then compare them with your answers and other information.

Where information conflicts, we ask specific follow-up questions. Unclear information is clarified before it is included in your application.

If anything is still needed for preparation, you receive specific feedback about the missing information or documents. We remind you about outstanding points and also contact you by telephone if we have not heard back.

We also check which supplementary evidence can be submitted later. Relevant documents already available are included directly in the application package.

  5. We complete your citizenship application for you

We prepare the application using your information and the documents we have checked. We use the current online form or the appropriate application form and take account of the responsible authority’s requirements.

We prepare the required application for each person seeking citizenship. If the available information does not answer a question on the form, we clarify it with you.

  6. We confirm the draft with you

Before submission, you receive a readable copy of the prepared application to check. You can take time to review your personal details and the information about your family, residence and employment.

We incorporate your corrections. We reassess legally significant or unclear changes and discuss them with you again where necessary. The application is submitted only once we have your confirmation.

  7. We submit your application with proof of receipt

We submit the application for you. We use the authority’s appropriate online application service or the special electronic mailbox for attorneys. If neither channel is available, we submit the application by post with proof of delivery.

When sending through the attorneys’ mailbox, the sending attorney checks the recipient, applicants and attached documents again. The submission is documented in your file.

After sending, we check receipt using the online portal confirmation, the successful beA transmission record or the postal delivery confirmation.

We save this evidence in your file along with the submission channel and relevant details. Once receipt has been confirmed, we inform you when your application reached the responsible authority.

Frequently asked questions about applying

Do I have to wait for an appointment with the authority before applying?

No – you do not need an in-person appointment to submit the application itself. The German Nationality Act does not prescribe a particular form for a citizenship application. We prepare your application and submit it to the responsible authority through an appropriate channel.

We have frequently submitted citizenship applications without a prior appointment with the authority. In those cases, the absence of an appointment did not prevent submission.

We therefore do not wait for an appointment to be allocated before submitting your prepared application.

Later appointments are a separate step

During the proceedings, the authority may invite you, for example:

  • to present original documents or
  • to attend an in-person interview.

We help you prepare for these appointments.

Won’t your emails also just get lost in the authority’s inbox?

We use the beA to send your application as an organised electronic package to the authority’s designated mailbox.

The special electronic mailbox for attorneys, known as beA, is a secure channel for attorneys’ correspondence. We use it where the authority has opened this channel for submissions. If a suitable online application service is available from the authority, we use that instead.

  • Related documents together: We combine the covering letter, power of attorney, application and supporting documents in one submission.
  • Clear organisation: We organise attachments by person and subject so they can be assigned to your application.
  • An attorney checks the submission: Before sending, the attorney making the submission checks the recipient and application package again.

Evidence of receipt

After sending, we check and save the transmission record.

This allows us to establish when transmission succeeded and provide evidence to the authority that your application was received.
